NOMFNATION OF CANDIDATES FOR

THE TOWN OP NEW PLYOUTH.

The nomination of candidates took place to-day at noon, at the Court-house. Tho attendance- 'was large. The Returning Officer having read the writ, called upon the electors to propose candidates.

After some minutes dolay Mr. Standish proposed Thomas Kelly as a fit and proper pcrnon to represent the Borough of Netv Plymouth in Parliaracht, He stated that Mr,' Kelly, had represented the Borough for ten years. He had been intimately conne6ted with the initiation of railway .works in this district. He had also worked hnrd in connection wfth the harbour scheme. He had been iuHtrumontalin opening up the roads in the. district, and had also obtai nod the endowments for a high school in New Plymouth. He had large political experience, and that wsw a very necessary cjualiflcation for a member. He was sound in his native policy. Mr. Courtney seconded the nomination. He had himself been asked to come forward and represent the Borough in the House, bnt he declined to do bo as ho could not conscientiously oppose a man like Mr. Kelly. Mr. B. WiSLLS proprosed A CracroftFookcs as a lit and proper person to represent the Borongh in Parliament. Ho thought it was good to have a little competition in political mutters. Mr. SCOTT seconded tho nomination, and said h« was of opinion that a change in the representative of the Borough wai desirable. The candidates then addressed the electors. At the conclusion of the address, the Returning Officer called for a show of hands, which was taken, and was declared by the Returning Ofliccr to ba in favour of Mr. Kelly. • - . . The Returning Officer •announced that tho poll would take place on Saturday next.
