Forty-two per confc of the population of this comparatively yonng Colony in native to the soil. The voting Now Zealanders number 174,126. Next to thnae come English, 106.496 ; Scotch, 47.649 ; Irish, 43,758 ; Australians, ] 6,091 ; oMifirßritish possessions, 3554; Wnles, 1702 ; Germans, 4649 ; French, 737 ; other Enropean conntries, 6803 ; United States, 714; Chinese, 4424. Nearly every known land lias con. tribnted its qnota to make up a hetero. genoons nation— from Norway, Finland, Lapland, and Nova Zombla to Arabiai Borneo, Abyssinia, and Argentine Confederation ; from Borbadoes and Jamaica to Hong Kong ; from Greenland's icy mountains to India's coral strand. There are 1213 Norwegians, 1162 Swedes, 2228 Panes, 538 Italians, 138 Dntch, 191 Portuguese, and 312 Swiaa in the Colony. Kamskatcha, Chili, Ecuador, Heligoland, Egypt Japan, Persia, Peru, Zanzibar, and a great nurabor of other countries, near and remote, are represented. In Otago the Scotch element preponderates, with 22,444 ; English, 19,933 ; Irish, 10,825. In Canterbury the fignres are— English 30,454 ; Irish, 10,849 ; Scotch, 7631. In Auckland— English, 21,452 ; Irish, 10,431 ; Scotch, 5506. WellingtonEnglish, 15,518 ; Irish, 3580; Scotoh, 3352.
