NATIVE AFFAIRS.

The Maori trespassers still continue 'their ploughing operations on Mr, Courtney's farm at Tapuae. They commenced work at 3 o'clock yesterday morning, and take the ploughs away with them every evening when they leave. A family recently residing at Orusita were so dissatisfied with the aspect of affairs that they have quitted the district, and left for Canterbury by the steamer this morning.

The natives state that they have no illfeeling towards the settlers, but it is the Government they wish to have an understanding with. They have no desire to fight, but, having thrown down the gauntlet, it is for the Government to settle the mattei 1 .

Our Carlyle correspondent telegraphed this morning :: — '•' It was reported here yesterday that natives had shot pigs aud interfered with Dickey's landatWaverley. The l'eport proved untrue. It is, however, true that Kereopa, a Waitara native, has been parading round the Momahaaka block with a double-barrelled gun bouncing about the acts of violence himself and others are intending to perform. A public meeting will be held at Carlyle to take action on the present threatening aspect of native affairs."
