THE WAIMATE DIFFICULTY.
The Wellington Post in a leading article on tho Waimate question, says "It is not probable that any definite action will be taken on either side relative to tho VVai-mate-Plains till after the great meeting at Kopua next week." The article is based on a private letter from Te Whetu, a sort of secretary to Te Whiti. Tho letter contains, among other statements, the following :—": — " Te Whiti, at the Parihaka meeting, bluntly accused Mr. Sheehanof pretending to put out the fire with one hand, while with the other he tried to rekindle the blaze." They allege also that the boundaries of the confiscated land, as originally proclaimed, have since been fraudulently altered, so as to include a large area of native land never legally confiscated. The position taken up by Te Whiti and Te Whetu is said to be this : They complain that they havo been wronged by the Government in the various respects above indicated. They accuse the Government of trying to provoke them into war after secretly collecting an armed force sufficient to crush them. Tlioy protest against these alleged wrongs, but utterly disclaim all intention of trying to redress them by force of arms.
