WAITARA TOWN BOARD.

The Board met" on Monday las^l ' JPreseni .' Messrs. F. L. Webster (Chairman), W. Brooking, B. C. Lawrence, and T. Elliot,- xnemberß.

Banking Account. — A letter was; read from the Agetitf of the Bank of New. Zealand at Raleigh, offering to take over Overdraft stand- • ing against the Board at the' National Bank.' Same accepted under terms therein contained.'

'Leasing the Runs. — It was resolved that the j leasing of the runs should be advertised, with-» v instructions to Mr. Gourtney to sell the same by auction at Waitara, on Thursday, tho 12th October ; ' lease to commence from the Ist inst., a"nd terminating with the Board's financial year, viz., September 30, 1877. Removal of4he Goods Shed. — the following, telegram from Mr. Kelly, M.H.&£ relative to the removal of goods shed, wap read : — " Wellington, September 30, 1876. F. L. Webster, Esq. — Have delayed replying till Minister of Public Works replied to memorial. Reply, just received, declining on account of Engi-neer-in-Chief statiDg the removal would cost £500; that it would also involve closing of Grey-street. The petition will be presented to the House on Monday,' and'l'will inform you of result. Eeserves will 'be made in' Raleigh for river and town improvements. T. Kelly."— The Chaihman stated his very* great surprise at the statement made in the' telegram, and regretted the Minister for Public Works should have been so wrohglyj, informed. He himself had taken particular interest in the removal of the building, and had previously taken the opinion of a competent perbon in the matter, who guaranteed its removal for the sum 'of £70';' he, therefore, immediately forwarded the following telegram in 1 rfeply : — " "T. Kelly, Esq., M.H.R.— HaT« : 'guaranteed!* tender for removal of building, one hundred feet clear of . Queen*street, towards Domettstreet ,f or, pounds. Cannot possibly r affect Grey-street. Ministers' estimate must bo n-tnistaker— F. L.—Webster."— Mr.Laweexck said thcifelegrrfm from Mr. Kelly as read, appeared so utterly absurd that at first sight one, would almost believe that neither the Erigineer-in-Chief or the Minister himself. bad a&y knowledge whatever, of the naturfe Of 'tlie work that * was "asked to b© ; performed. ' The original struttbre' could not have exceeded this amount. As to the alteration causing the closing of Grey-street, it Btill further impressed him that the Minister for Public Works had been wrongly informed in the whole •■ rtiatler. The 'principal Street was closed as it were from the fact that tho goods shed stands in it? centre. Grey-street could not under any circumstances whatever be affected by tho removal: and .even if so, it appeared to him fur preferable to close a street which in nil- probability would not be required for years to come, to obstructing the main thoroughfare of the township; 1 Ho concluded by sincerely hoping the whole matter wpuld, , be sifted out and madcSkriowu for tlie information' of the rato? Jyiyers. — Mr. Brooking was certainly much surprised at' the telegram. About six months' ago his opinion was taken ns to tlio cost of its romoval, and be~, estimated the same at £50, irrespective, Of' 'cburae/of anynlvereion or alteration in tho" permanent way, which, however, he" niight 1 add I , 'would not be affected on the removal of 'the building. He was r - confident tliht wWett" the telegram 'bfebamo publicly known it woold'bo generally believed thati'soWperßoumverfe iisirnr their best'fende'a-' vors to retard- 'tbS 1 'progrttis of tho township. Ho himself concluded it was tho intention of ; the ftulhbritteiitO'rjrevenfiWVemdvkl. 1
