ESTIMATES, 1875-76.

The following is a summary of the estimated expenditure for the General Government service for the year ending 30th June, 1876:—

A Cbuel Hoax.— The Auckland Star says — We are most happy to record that the rumour respecting the death of Captain Casey was wholly unfounded, the captain being rapidly recovering his wonted health. But there is a little characteristic incident in connection with the affair that is too good to be lost. It appears some fifty people had called during the day anxiously enquiring respecting the health of the invalid. In the evening he was sitting up in company with Mr. Lewisson, muffled up indeed, but cosily enjoying a good tumbler of toddy, and rubbing up a pipeful of tobacco, preparatory to a comfortable smoke, when tap ! tap .' tap ! came another caller — Mr. Dixon. One of the young ladies met the visitor, received his name, and announced him. " What Mr. Dixon ?" inquired the captain. The young lady went out, and obtained the requisite information : " Mr. Dixon, the undertaker." " Umph !" replied the worthy captain: "Tell him I'm not ready yet. I'm having a glass of punch." The Perils of Teaching Gramsiab.— The following has been ' going the rounds- of late.' We give it in our turn ; — ' I have been Bendin my darter Nancy to skool to a skoolmaster in this neighborhood. Last Friday I went over to the skool to see how -Nancy was gettin along, and I seed things I didn't like by no means. The ekoolmaster was larnin her things entirely out of the line of eddycation, and, as I think, improper. I sot a while in the skool-house, and beered one class say their lesson. They was a spellin, and I thought spelled quite exceedingly. Then cum Nancy's turn to say her lesson. She said it very spry. I was shok't, and determined she should leave the skool. I heered that grammer was an uncommon fine study, ' but I don't want any more grammer about my house. The lesson that Nancy sed was nuthin but the foolshest kind of talk; the rediclist word she said was, "I love." I looked right at her hard for being so improper, but she went right on and sed, "thou lovest and he loves." And I reckon you never heard such rigermarolo in your lifo — love, Jovo, love, lovo, love, and nuthin but love. . She sed one time, " I did love." Sez I, " Who did you love 1" Tho scholars laffed ; but I wasn't to be put off, and sed, " Who did you love, Nancy 7" Tho skool-master, Mr. M'QuiHister, put in, he said he would explain when Nancy finished the lesson. This sorter pacified me, aud Nancy went on with her awful love talk. It got wus and wus every word. She sed, " I might, could, or would love." I stopped her again, and said I reckon'd I would see about that, and told her to walk out ef that house. Tho skool-master tried to interfere but I would not let him say a word. He said I was a fool and I nok't him down, and made him holler in short order. I talkt the strate thing to him. I told him I'd show how hedo learn my darter grammer. I got tho nabors together, and wo sent Mr, M'QuiHister off in a hurry, and I reckon tharl be no more grammer tctcbin in these parts soon. If you know of any other I oldish man in your region that don't tciisli I grammer, we would be glad if you would send him up. But in future wo will bo kecrful how wo employ mon. Young skool-masters won't do, especially if tboy teach grammer. It is a bad thing for morals,'
