PROVINCIAL TELEGRAMS.

AUCKLAND. April 23. A fjke took place at Obahuhu to-day, by which two stacks of hay were destroyed, valued at £200. The Superintendent lias started on a visit to the Thames and Ohinemuri. Apjil 24. Two stacks of hay, valued at £IGO, uniusured, belonging to Bo vey, farmer, at Mangarc, were destroyed by fire yesterday. This is doubtless another case of incendiarism, which is becoming alarmingly frequent of late. The Hon. Mr. Reyuolds went for a cruise in the 'Southern Cross' yesterday, the vessel being worked by boys. He expressed great satisfaction with the state of discipline exhibited. April 2G. Advices have been received that in 'Cospatrick' case the Court was unanimously of opinion that the fire originated in the forehold, which was accessible from foredeck by removing two boards from the bulkhead. The Court could come to no other conclusion than that some of the crew or immigrants had found access to the forehold to plunder cargo, aud in using naked light or matches must have set fire to straw uud other inflammable matter, which extends to hatch, &c, near. The Court said the proper number of boats were on board, but regretted that they were not got iv readiness when alarm of lire was given, and considered that stowiug boats bottom up was objectionable. The Court recommended that in all passenger ships a strong bulkhead should be put between forcpeak and inaiubold. Grahams town, April 24. There is nothing new from Tairua to-day, pxcept that speculation has already commen•3d in the shares of the Tairua Company. I was shown a transfer to-day in which Mr. Jackson, of Tairua, purchased 155 shares iv tho new Company for £360. Another transaction has since been reported. Mr. Ehreufriud purchased 50 shares for £100. Operations are to commence in the claim oil Tucsda}'. The manager and shareholders arc now on the Thames procuring tools, aud a 4-stamper batteiy has been purchased. A drive will be commenced, and a shaft started to meet 3^ on Tuesday morning. April 26. Nineteen deaths wcro registered at Grahamstown last week, which is more thau average for the month during ordinary season. Five funerals of children took place yesterday. Road to Tairua is impassable ou account of late ruin*. The s.s. 'Taranaki was detained by tho Hon. AY. H. Reyuolds till 12.30 to-day, for mails per ' Hero " for Southern ports. - Tauranga, April 21. Much pleasure is expressed here at the release of Sergeant Kiug, A.C., from Mount Eden. His friends propose giving him a hearty reception on arrival. " Captain Forster has taken charge of tho force at Rotorua, vice Gilbert Mair, who has resigned. Mackaytown, April 24. Some little excitement "was caused last night by a report that the Maoris had turned off the labourers (15 iv number) employed by Mr. H. C. Young on tho disputed block of hind at the Koniato. Not content with this, Tutukino and his mob burned down tho whare, aud used violence. Such was the talo sent up here from tho Paeroa, and Inspector Kewholl at once rode off to ascertain (ho state of affairs. This story gained credence, as it was known that "Young had applied iv tho morning for police protection aud was refused. However, on Inspector Ncwhall's arrival at Koniato nil was quiet, as Mr. Young found that to insist ou clearing the land would canto a disturbance, he therefore agreed to leave the matter until (ho arrival of Mr. Mncka) r . The land iv question was bought some time ago by Young, from Mataia's and Pcreiicki's people, but Tukukino lays claim to a largo sectiou, and his interest has not been respected. Iv his opposition he is supported by many Maoris, who havo very iittle interest in land, but have ever been the most bitter obstructionists to the opening of thcjcouutiy.
