THE DESTRUCTION BY FIRE OF THE CARLTLE HOTEL.

ABSENT MILITIAMEN PINED FOR NON-ATTENDANCE, (FBOM OUR OWN COBttBSPONDENT.) Cablyi.e, April 25. — At about 2.30 a.m. this morning, Sergeant Meredith, A.C., was aroused from his slumbers by a very bright * light, which he found to be from the Carlyle Hotel, owned by Mr. McGuiro, M.P.C. He at 'once gave the alarm ; bnfc too late, as the fire bad gained sooh a bold as to prevent any exertions being effectual, beyond saving the jgnrronnding properties. Mr. MoGnire was l^knfortanately away up-country at the time of H^ie fire taking place. A small quantity of fur. niturfr, 40., belonging to Mr.' Ussher, of the Goo Hotel, was saved ; but some was also - burnt. The honse'tias been un occupied for a week ; and, as au enquiry is to be held on Monday, the 27th, comment would at present be nnadvisable. It is generally supposed that the house is well insured. This shows the ad.vantage of having local agents ; as, had it not been for that, Mr. MoGuire would have possibly been a very heavy loser. — [By a tele- - gram we learn that au inquest was .held, and a verdiot returned to the effeot '*. that the c bnilding waa wilfully burnt by some person or persons nnknowo."J The contractors for the Patea, Bridge are ( making very good progress. The first, six 'piers are all driven very successfully ; also braced. The longitudinal beams are nearly completed on these six piers. The seventh . pier is also in a forward state. The district, as well as the contractor, has been highly favoured by the weather, as a very large quantity of the timber is ;oow oo the ground adjacent to the bridge ;' and the roads are rather improved than injured by the passing of the timber wagons. Mr. Handle hopes to have the whole of the timber on the ground before' the wet season commences.
