CANTERBURY.
The ' Mallard' arrived at Lyttelton on the 27th, being 127 days ont from London ; also the same day the 'Rakaia,' 8U days from Plymouth, with 504 immigrants and ten saloon and three second cabin passengers. There were six deaths (children), and eight births. Both vessels belong to the New Zealand Shipping Company. . Mr. Holloway, tbe agent for the English Agricultural Labourers' Union, has arrived at Christchnrch. The complete census returns of the ' Province of Canterbury are published. I The population is — males, 32,294 ; fe- ' males, 26,476. Total, 58,770. Being an increase since last census of males, 6,933 ; females, 5,468. Total, 12,401. j
Death of Captain Blake, R.N.— TCe ' notice (hat Captain Blake, formerly lieutenant of H.M.S. ' Niger,' has died of dysentery on tho West Coast of Africa. The Home News says— " Captain Blake of the ' Druid', died of fever and dysentery on the 27th January, and was buried on shore with all due honours, minnte guns being fired by H.M.S. ' Aotivo' aud tho fort."
