CRICKET MATCH.
MARRIED F. SINGLE.
The cricketing season was opened here on Monday last, by the Taranaki Cricket Club, when a matoh was played between the married and single members. Tha weather was favourable, and the fine ground of the Club presented quite a brilliant appearance from the fact that the matoh oreated considerable interest. We have rarely seen so so many lady spectators present as on this occasion, and doubtless this circumstance contributed to the improved p ia r ° c tU ° t>o,oi»oiorn. The married men won the toss, and sent their opponents to the wioket. Space does not permit of our tonohing in detail upon the play, suffice it that the batting of Messrs. Langtry, Drew, and Jenkins for the single, oall for special notice ; while that of Messrs. E. Hammond, F. Hammond, and W. Nicholls, for the married, waß also excellent. The bowling of the baohelors was also above their average, though that of their opponents was not nearly so effective aB ÜBual. The first innings shewed a total of eighty -six runß for the baohelors. This soore rather discouraged the married team, and opinions quickly changed as to the result of the match. At the cIoSJ of their first innings, the married had run up the small score of forty-six rana, leaving the bachelors their seooud innings with a confidence we have not observed in their play for some seasons past, and soon reached the respectable score of sixtyfive runs. The result of the game was now apparent, and at the close of the match left the bachelors victorious by seventy runs, Messrs. E. Hammond and A. S. Douglas were the captains of tbe respective teams ; and Messrs. J. H. H. Smith and W. Bullot acted as umpires to the entire satisfaction of the players. The following is the soore list : —
