The Taranaki Herald.

PUBLISHED OH WEDNESDAYS AND SATURDAYS.

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 1872.

THE PEINCE OF WALES' BIRTHDAY. Monday last was observed as a general holiday, and, the weather being all that could be desired, the town was deserted during the day. From an early hour the streets were astir, and it was pleasant to see the several parties, either on horsebaok or in conveyances, leaving town for the Waitara, which was the great centre of attraction for the day. A oricket matoh also, attracted a number of spectators, amongst whom we noticed a large Bpriukling of ladies. The match resulted in a victory for the bachelors ; but we must refer oor readers to the report of it, which will be fonnd in another column. Altogether, it was one of the most 'enjoyable holidays the people have had for some time.

Dr. Cabe will give two of his popular seances in the Odd Fellows' Hall, on Monday and Tuesday evenings next. We have no doubt that the introdnetion of the laughing gas will be the means of attracting large audiences.

Criminal Assault on a Child.— Yesterday, James Charles Donnelly was brought before the Resident Magistrate, oharged with au artempt upon Mary Elizabeth Bartlett. Mr. Standish appeared for the proseontion, and Mr. Carthew for the prisoner. After hearing the evidence (the details of which are unfit for publication), the prisoner was committed to take his trial at the next criminal sittings of the District Conrt.

A Horse Without an Owner. — We are glad to hear that there were no accidents at the Waitara on Monday last ; but we learn that, yesterday morning, a horse, with a saddle and bridle on it, was foand by Mr. Hirst in hip paddook at Mangoraka. Mr. Hirst also found a felt hat, with a puggeree on it, and a haudkerohief stained with blood. We have not heard of any one being missed ; so we presume the owner of the horse will claim it when ha knows where it is.
