THE THAMES GOLD FIELD. Grahamstown, July 27. — Twelve hundred, weight of specimens were takeu out of the Caledonian during the night. The face of the stope looks splendid. The manager banked 996 ounces of gold, the yield from general stuff. The show of specimens is still good ; nearly four tons are on hand. Good stone has been taken out of branch string veins in the chamber in the new low level. There is very promising country in that part of the mine. A serious accident occurred in the Golden Crown mine to-day. John Girvan and James Viport were workiug in the deep winze on the Caledonian boundary. A. blasting charge exploded unexpectedly, burning their faces and the upper part of their bodies. They were not dangerously wounded. Golden stone has been struck in the Central Italy mine, in the 250 feet shaft. It is believed to be a new leader. July 28. — The Caledonian lodged 708 ! ounces this morning. Total in bank for I the week, 2,384 ounces. A parcel of 100 tons of Alburnia tailings were sold to-day by Mr. D. J. O'Keeffe > and realised £1 per ton. A serious accident, caused by unexpected explosion of shot, whereby one man named Tanner was seriously injured, occurred in the Caledonian mine this morning. Sbotover tributers have obtained 11 ounces 16 pennyweights, from a few pounds of specimens cfushed at Spencer and Hall's machine. 604 ounces of gold was banked this evening, on behalf of the Caledonian Goldmining Company, making a total of 2,988 ounces in the bank. Rich stone has been taken from No. 1 winze ; the old run of gold is looking well. Specimens are still being* taken out ; there are at present 3| tons of specimen stuff on hand. The Central Italy leader is increasing in. size and richness. Sixty-nine tons of stone from the Red White aud Blue, yielded 103 ounces of gold. The total yield from the six weeks' crushing of general stuff for the Nonpareil is 808 ounces ; the specimens yielded 633 ounces. It is reported that gold has been struck in the Bright Smile claim. July 29. — The Caledonian have lodged 668 ounces. Total, 3,700 ounces in the bank. Vulcan first general crushing has yielded 65 ounces from 33 tons of stone. Knranui Company has obtained 97 ounces 14 pennyweights during the past fortnight. Queen of Beauty, one week's crushing, yielded 50 ounces gold. The weather, after a short break, has , set in bad again. Heavy rain is now falling. The City of London lode has been cut in the Queen of May grouud, and gold seen in it. City of London crushing has given 50 ounces from 43 tons. Eight tons from the Port Phillip lease, Tinker's Gully, have yielded llf ounces gold. Prospects of the mine are excellent. July 30. — The manager of the Caledonian Goldmining Company lodged 707 ounces of gold in the bank last evening, making the total for the 'week 4,404 ounces. ,x, x Caledonian shares were last evening quoted at £200 ; Thames, £39 ; Tookey, £39; Otago, £4; Bright Smile, £1 ; City of London, 12s. 6d. ; Queen of May, Bs. July 31. — Rich stone is reported to have been found in the new level chamber of the Caledonian mine. Bright Smile lode is turning out well ; good specimens were sent up this morning. A serious hitch has, however, occurred. The claim, it is said, is in one of the reserves set aside for native cultivation purposes, and therefore is outside the gold-fields law. The natives talk about entering an action for heavy damages. Price of scrip, which was ruling high, suddenly declined. Kelly's tributers have crushed half a hundredweight of specimens at Spencer's machine, and obtained 32 ounces 14 pennyweights of melted gold. August 1. — More specimens have been found in the Bright Smile mine. The Tookey pumping engine and the Waiotahi Association's crushing machine had to stop work — lacking coal. More specimeus were taken out of the Caledonian mine to-night. The specimen crushing will commence to-morrow. The monthly crushing return of the Manukau shows that 975 tons of quartz were crushed during tho month to a return of 1,476 ounces of gold. The share market is easier. Quotations remain about the same as yesterday. Bright Smile shares closed — buyers at £1 155., sellers at £2. Caledonian, £195. LATEST PRICES OF SHARES. The brokers report the share market as rather inactive. The sales comprise — Thames, £38; Nonpareil, £4 10s. ; Bright ' Smile, £1 155., £2 ; Central Italy, £1 15s. The market closed with — buyers : Caledonian, £190; Thames, £37 10s.; Tookey, £37; Tokatea, £1 2s. 6d. ; Golden Calf, £2 2s. 6d. ; Bright Smile, £2 ; Central Italy, £2.
