CANTERBURY— May 16.

The circulars to hand by tho ' Nevada,' relative to the advance of wheat in England, have been fully confirmed by private advices, and wo nnderstand that buyers are already in thia market, but the quotations now demanded by holders will prevent operations of any magnitude. The millers have great difScnlty in getting good dry parcels of wheat, and it is reported that ss. has been given for picked samples. For export there aro buyers in the market up to 4s. 9d., and several sales have been made at this figure. Holders of stored samples are somewhat careless in quitting at anything nnder 55., and, judging from the present aspect of the market, we should not think they would have long to wait. Faulty and grown lots are in better request, at quotations ranging from 3s. 6d. to 4s. Flour is meeting with a steady demand ; several large shipments are being made to Euglaud ; present quotations are £13 to £13 10s. The demand for oats remains active, bat little, if any, alteration can be noted since our last week's report. Good bright sampies are not offering to any extent, while discoloured and damaged are held largely, and great diffionlty is experienced in working them off. For good bright stored lines of potato oats, 2s. 3Jd. to 2s. 4d. is noted, and for forward delivery 2s. 2d. to 2s. 3d. is the ruling rate. Tartarian remain neglected at Is. lid. up to 2s. Wo have heard of a few sales being made in store at 2s. Id. The trade doing in barley is limited ; for the moment the brewers are fully stocked, and for export the price now given is very discouraging to the farmer. Quotations vary so much that it is with some difficulty we can give market rates ; for bright pale samples 3s. 6d. may be noted for local purposes j discoloured and faulty range from 2s. to 2s. Bd. The demand for butter noted last week continues active, and quotations if anything, show more firmness at 63d. to 7d. Cheese does not improve in price beyond 4d. to 4id, and supplies are somewhat excessive. New season's enre of hams and bacon are now offering at B|d. to 9d.— Times.
