LATEST FROM AUCKLAND.
NEWS TO 20th MAY. EXTRAORDINARY YIELD OF GOLD FROM THE CALEDONIAN. CALEDONIAN SCRIP UP TO £212. By the s.s. ' St. Kilda,' which put in here for coals yesterday, we have four days later news from Auckland. We learn from Captaiu Flowerday, that Auckland was in a great state of excitement, owing to the recent find of gold in the Caledonian mine. The following are the latest items of news we have gathered from the papers to hand : — Thames, May 18. — The Caledonian will lodge heavy retortings of nearly 3,000 ounces to-morrow. The market is very excited. Buyers of Caledonian at £150, no sellers. — [The quotations on the previous day for this scrip was £ICO to £102].— Thames, £29 to £30 ; Alburnia, £2 10s. ; Inverness, £1 ; Belfast, £4 to £4 ss. The manager of the Caledonian reports another ton of specimen stone obtained since last night. Six head of stampers were started on specimens this morning, at the Company's machine. Great excitement prevails here on account of this, the latest heavy find in the mine, and the price of scrip has advanced with almost unprecedented rapidity, the latest quotation at 4 p.m., being £165. The Caledonian pays another dividend of £10 per share to-day. The Thames Company pays one of £1 10s. to-morrow. Thames, May 19. — The Herald correspondent on the evening of this date writes thus of the Caledonian mine :—": — " 1 have nothing new to report to-day respecting this mine ; the same things over again — large blocks of almost solid gold visible, which are being taken out as the timbering progresses, and the retorting going on as fast as ever. The amount of gold lodged during the day, up to 5 o'clock, is upwards of 11,000 ounces. Several retorts are now upon the fire, which will yield about 3,000 ounces more, so that by ' the evening I expect there will be a total lodgment of upwards of 14,000 ounces, while the boxes sfcil remained crammed full of the richest specimens yet to crush. There is a good deal of speculation as to the probable amount of the next dividend, and sums varying from £20 to £40 are freely named. My opinion is that from £25 to £30 may be relied upon." On the 20th the Caledonians rose to £212, and it was expected that before another week they would be at £250. The retorting and melting for the Caledonian for the week was 21,000 ounces,
