The Wanganui herald.

PUBLISHED ON WEDNESDAYS AND SATURDAYS. WEDNESDAY, MAY 4, 1870. Fuom the outline of the debates in the Imperial Parliament which have come to hand by the mail, it is almost impossible to judge what the opinions of the members are with regard to New Zealand affairs. We gather from it, however, that, there is no likelihood of a reversal of Earl Granvilles' policy. From a telegram we learn that Earl Granyille in the House of Lords, in reply to Lord Carnarvon, in the course of a discussion on the New Zealand question, stated " that the departure of the 18th Regiment would be enforced, but the officers would be permitted to enter the Colonial service ; that honours had been, conferred on Colonel Whitmore and Mr. Donald McLean, and on the friendly chiefs. The squadron on the station was to be reinforced, and an extra ship sent out to watch the proceedings of vessels engaged in the Coolie trade." Our Commissioners, we learn, have arrived in England, and though they have been hard at work, have not made much progress in the objects of their mission. They have met with a good reception everywhere, and have left no stone unturned to serve the Colony. From accounts received from them, we 1 hear that they are not sanguine as to their

ultimate success with reference to a regiment of the Imperial troops being retained in the Colony. Should their request in this matter not be granted, there is no probability of their endeavouring to obtain powers to raise a colonial force. The Commissioners appear' to have been met by the members of the Government more immediately connected with the Colonies, with the unfailing " non-intervention" policy. If Dr. Featherston and Mr. Dillon Bell do not succeed in the main objects of their journey, they will not return without having produced a wholesome effect upon the interests of the Colony notwithstanding.
