EXHIBITION OF MR. PHENEY'S WATER.

COLOUR DRAWINGS. Wb yesterday afternoon had much pleasure in inspecting the water-colour drawings .executed by Mr. R. Pheney, jun., for the Otago Fine Artß Exhibition. They were exhibited in the reading room of the Institute, and commanded muoh attention from the numerous visitors ; aud will no doubt quickly find purchasers when they reach Dunedin. Mr. Pheney has chosen Mount Egmont as the theme for four of his pictures, and the Sugar Loaves for the other two. One picture represents the mountain before sunrise, just after the grey dawn has passed. It is truthfully cold, and gives an excellent idea of Mount Egmont at that hour of the morning. In No. 2 we have a view taken from Mangorei, showing the mountain at mid-day. The picture is bright and pleasing, and was greatly admired by several who were there. No. 3 and 4 were sunset viewß. The former taken from the Carrington road, and the latter from the beach near to where the ' George Henderson' was wrecked. No. 3is a beautiful little sketch, but No. 4 took onr fancy more than ail the rest. There is a large pool iv the fore ground, in whioh the mountain, resplendent with a setting sun, is reflooted. The transparency of the water is exquisite, whilst the purple hue of the ranges— contrasting with snow on the mountain — gives an excellent idea of Mount Egmont just previous to the sun disappearing for the day. It is really a beautiful artistio picture, and oannot fail to exoite muoh admiration at the forthcoming exhibition. The other piotnres representing the Sugar Loaves are equally good ; but the one in which a steamer is at anchor and a storm brewing is tho best of the two. Mr. Pheney excels in his skies, whioh are truthful to a tint. The piotures will be forwarded by the ' Rangatira,' and we shall watch with muoh interest for any remarks that may be made on them by the Otago press when the Exhibition opens.
