The Effects of Smoking.— A paper on the effects of smoking, which was read by Dr. Jolly at a recent sitting of the French Academy of Sciences, has attracted some attention at Paris. In this paper the author attributes to the excessive use of tobacco the increase of insanity in France and oth3r countries. Debility in the functions of the brain and the spinal cord is, he says, the consequence of this practice, and such debility ultimately leads to insanity. He illustrates his statement by a comparison of the increase in the number of the insane with that in the consumption of tobacco. It appears that from' 1812 to 1842 the revenue of the tobacco monopoly has increased from 28 to 180 millions, and the number of lunatics in France from 800 to 44,000.
