Provincial Council. — At the meeting of the Council on Monday evening it was decided that the rates for the year 1859-60 should be refunded to those who have paid them in the country districts. A large number of ratepayers had not paid their rates at the time the war broke out, and it was not thought desirable to attempt to enforce their payment ; more than a year having now expired since they became due, they are no longer recoverable, and the ortly equitable course is to refund the money to those who have already paid. The Council has adjourned till summoned by the Speaker. Native Intelligence. — We have kon reliable native authority that a cow or bullock, the property of a white man, was killed, about a fortnight ago, on a settler's farm at Tataraimaka, and that a young beast was also driven away at the same time. The names of the natives who were chiefly concerned in this are Tipene, Horomana, and Hopa, and they belong, we believe, to Minarapa's party. The Southern tribes seem determined that the Government shall not have the plea of subsequent good conduct to allege as an excuse for condoning their past offences. Hapurona. — We are informed that Hapurona has left Mataitawa for Waikato. Death by Drowning.— On Tuesday, the 14th instant, about 12 o'clock, John Bland and Frederick Nichols, privates in the 57th Regiment, and both tailors by trade, went to bathe from the beach near Fort Stapp. "Whilst they were in the water, three drummer boys came down, one of whom, Daniel Hurly, went in also, swam out beyond the two men, and, getting afraid, called to Nichols to come to his assistance. Both the men made for the boy, Bland following after Nichols. When the former got near the lad, he heard his comrade call out, and, turning round, saw him struggling in a breaker. Nichols immediately made for the place, but could see nothing of the unfortunate man. The boy pot to shore in safety. Bland's body was found on Thursday morning by the boats' crew, near the spot where he was drowned, and was buried the same evening in St. Mary's Churchyard, with military houors. The deceased was about 25 years of age, and had been only 18 months in the service, being one of the last drafts of the regiment from England. Caution to Bathers.— A large shark, estimated at fully 12 feet in length, was seen the other day by one of the boatmen, near the landing place, cruising about in search of offal, or some more savoury meal.
