UNITED STATES.
Two weeks later news from Camp Scott, Utah, has been received. The troops were in good health ; and as Colonel Johnston had 1800 men and 1000 animals in good condition, the impression was that he would not wait for reinforcements, but would proceed as soon as practicable. Nothing positive was known of the intentions of the Mormons, as all communication with Salt Lake City was prohibited. An attack was made on the Secretary of the Interior in the hall of the department on the forenoon of the Bth. Peter Bensanyon, a Frenchman of New Orleans, who was dismissed from the Pension Office some month back, and refused a re-appointment by the Secretary of the Interior, in revenge sought that official at the Land Office on the morning in question, and as the Secretary came out of the private office presented a pistol at him. Mr Thompson instantly struck the pistol' from his hand, caught Bensanpon by the arm, threw him down, and jumped on him, breaking his arm, and then picked up the pistol and went to his office.
