COURTS.

POLICE COURT.— Saturday. Before JACKSON KEDDELL, Esq. It.II. Drunkenness. —Mary Ann Edgeworth, charged with being drunk, was discharged, Mr Bullen requesting to withdraw the charge, saying there were peculiar circumstances in the case. The woman was apprehended for being drunk in Albert-street, Grahamstown, and was taken to the lockup. He was shortly afterwards informed that she had a young child which was not with her, and was likely to die for want of its natural sustenance. Under the circumstances he thought it right to release her for the sake of humanity, and lie would now ask to have the charge withdrawn. —The R.M. told the woman he hoped she would not appear again. If the charge had been pressed she would have had to be fined, and in the event of not being able to pay, would have had to go to gaol, which might have been very prejudicial to the health of her infant. The unfortunate woman then left the Court, doubtless satisfied that she had been very considerately treated. —John Rice, charged with being drunk, was fined 10s. Creating a Nuisance.— Owen Griffiths pleaded guilty to the charge of neglecting to keep clean his premises in Queen-street The Inspector of Nuisances stated that there was a closet overfh wing, from which a very offensive smell emanated. — The R.M. said the health if the neighbours was prejudiced by such neglect of sanitary laws, and it appeared that defendant had been fined before Mr Davy. In the present case a fine of 40s. or 14 day imprisonment would be imposed.
