While blasting operations were proceeding on the main Cambridge to Rotorua road, near Karapiro, some fifteen pounds of blasting powder lying on ground nearby exploded, and three men, John Dennis, W. Armstrong, and Dallas Conte were injured, being severely burned about the face and hands. A Maori named Riwa courageously seized Dennis and dragged him away before the second explosion occurred.
