MAORI ENTERTAINMENT.’ ’ On Friday evening last) .thgi.-TcT muka Maoris gave a most successful concert in Victoria Hall, Winchester, for the purpose <jf raising money for enlarging the hall. There was a good attendance, and those present enjoyed one of the best concerts ever held in Winchester. The singing, in particular, was very good, and the poi, canoe, and haka items were up to a very high standard. The two hours’ entertainment seemed all too short. Much credit is due to Mr W. Torepe for arranging the concert, and when Mr L. H. Orbell (chairman of the Hall Committee), in proposing a vote of thanks to the performers, said when he had seen Mr Torepe about arranging a concert for the hall funds, Mr Torepe was very motjest about it. The Maori concert given that evening was unique for 'Winchester, for all' the performers'were' Maoris, and every one of them had excelled themselves that evening, those present enjoying one of the best concerts ever staged in Winchester. (Loud applause). Mr Orbell said it was a great compliment to the Maoris that every item .was encored, and he called for three cheers for the performers, which were heartily given. Mr Norman Waa.ka was. chairman for the evening, and Miss K. Taipana was leader of the 'Maori dances.

After supper, a short dance wa-s held, Mr J. Rickus supplying the music, and Mr A. Wixon efficiently carrying out the duties of M.C.

The following programme, was given:—Opening chorus, . by..-.the company: poi dance, junior girls; duet, Misses Hampstead and Stewart; Maori action song, senior girls; Maori war dance. Maori warriors; welcome poi dance, senior girls, song, Mr J. Rickus; Maori action song, Miss Stewart and company, Maori ha.ka, boys; double poi dance, senior girls; duet, Messrs A. Wixon and J. Rickus; chorus, by the company; action song, junior, girls; recitation, Master Wiremu Torepe; song, Mr A. Wixon; long string poi, senior girls; song, Miss Stewart, haka, by the men; song, Miss B. Rehu; recitation, Master Whaitiri; song, Mrs P. Rehu; canoe poi dayce medley, by the company. , r . Miss Amokura Torepe and Mr .J. Rickus artistically played the accompaniments for the evening. A Christmas cake .guessing /’Pl} l ' petition was won by Miss..A, D a .yj?, Clandeboye.
