Yesterday was the 77th Anniversary of tin Province of Canterbury, Formerly a close holiday throughout the province, yesterday the anniversary was only marked locally by the closing of the banks. All ratepayers are notified in this issue that all rates remaining Unpaid in the borough of Temuka after Monday, 19th December, will have the 10 per cent, penalty added to them. “Post early for Christmas” is the advice now being stamped on letters posted at the Wellington G.P.O The advice is good, and should be heeded by those who wish prompt delivery of their mail. The weather continues to be very unseasonable and changeable. On Thursday afternoon, at Temuka, there were even several hailstorms but luckily they were of short duration. Yesterday the weather was showery and wintry. The Temuka 1.0.0. F. picnic at Kakahu will he held on Monday, 26th December. Tickets are obtainable from Mr J. K. Young (chairman) and M. Scott (secretary). Lorries leave 1.0.0. F. Lodge Room at 8.30 a.m„ and will travel down North Town Belt, along Maude* street, and up Denmark street, to pick up passengers. The Toy Cave, at the request of numerous clients, Is to be reopened in Comer’s buildings, ■ where there is to bo a big range of toys and novelties to choose from, at prices cneaper than ever. On Wednesday next, at 7.30 p.m. at St. Peter’s, Temuka, there is to be a choral evensong, followed by a recital of Christmas music by the Choir. A splendid programme has been provided. The Geraldine Anglican Sunday School authorities, who had projected a picnic at Milford for yesterday, were unfortunate in striking a wet day for their annual outing. They were not to be denied their treat, however, and after having lunch in the Parish Hall, instead of on the sea beach, they got away in closed cars during a brief burst of sunshine, and were driven down to the seaside holiday resort. Mr J. Steven, auctioneer, Geraldine, has received instructions from Mrs Woodhouse, who is leaving the district, to sell her household furniture and effects, on Thursday, December 22, at 1.30 p.m. A list of things to be sold will be found in an advertisement in this iss.ue. Mr Steven will also sell furniture, etc., on account of other clients, and at the same time and place Christmas poultry, geese, ducks, etc. An important notice by the Temuka Borough Council appears in this issue, concerning the closing of the office for the Christmas and New Year holidays, warning persons against letting off fireworks in the streets or ringing the firebells, and reminding license-holders that all licenses issued under the borough by-laws expire on the 31st December, and must be immediately renewed. » A big display of glorious crystal, electro-plate, watches and novelty gifts well describes the assortment at W. To-morrow, at the invitation of the Mayor and Councillors of the borough of Temuka, the pioneers of the district will attend divine service at the Presbyterian Church, Temuka. The pioneers’ service is now an annual function, and the Council arranges that it shall be held oil the Sunday nearest to the 16th December —Anniversary Day. The Mayor and Council particularly desire the presence of the pioneers of the district at the service, which will be appropriate to the occasion. The pioneers arc invited to meet a* the,-Post Office' corner, and cars will be provided for any of such unable to walk. 'The Mayor and Councillors- are attending the service.
