WAITOHI.
TENNIS CLUB. After many weeks of voluntary' labour, the residents of Waitohi opened their new tennis court on December 8. A large number of visitors and local people assembled and many congratulatory remarks were made concerning the* manner in which fhe work had been carried out. Mr A. E. Smart, president of the' .Club, told of the manner in which the club had come to be formed. He said that all had had to work very hard, for the supervisors did not allow any slackness. He thanked all for the support that had been given, and then called on Mr T. E. Gunnion (Mayor of Temuka) to open the club. Mr Gunnion, in declaring the courts, open for the season, referred to the place of sport in life, and commended the residents on their enterprise in opening a club. Mrs Gunnion then lilt the first ball over the net. A fine exhibition set was then played by the Misses R. and F. Pearse and Messrs W. Pearse and R. Lee. Afternoon tea was dispensed by lady members of the club. During the afternoon and until darkness stopped play, the court was fully occupied. In the evening, a largely attended and enjoyable dance was held. Music was supplied 1 by Messrs J. Cowles, D. Parker and W. Cruickshank. Mr A. Allan carried out the duties of M.C. Extras were given by Messrs W. Crawford, Ralston, Hoare, Green and J. Cole. Mr Gower, secretary of the club, briefly thanked the musicians for their help during the evening, and Mr Cruickahank suitably responded.
