The tracks are very bard in Canterbury just now, but at time of writing a light drizzle is fulling and this will have the effect of softening the surface- of the ground a little, and thus, make it easier for those in steady work. Comic Song, by his win in the Publican’s Handicap at Dunedin, is entitled to rank as one of the topnotchers over six furlongs. Evidently the going suited him, for the -Wingatui course after a shower or two would be well to his liking. The success of Footfall in the Cup was anticipated by a few local sports after the way he ran in Wellington, and Vaward, in getting into the money, shows that he is on the improve and should not he long in .saluting' the judge. The disappointing Flaming Ray made amends somewhat for many defeats by scoring in the President’s Handicap at Dunedin. The win was long overdue. - Calicite, who ran second in a race at Ashburton recently, filled the same, position on Thursday. So far, the latter performer has been very consistent, and will be extremely unlucky if a win does not eventuate shortly. After several “outers,” Coastguard placed a win to his credit at Dunedin on Thursday by annexing' the 'Autumn Hurdles. Over a mils distance, when in fettle John Bradbury takes a good deal of beating when under a handy impost, and on Thursday in the Stewards’ Handicap, he again showed his heels to the field, u hich was a pretty strong one. “John” is a good traveller, and does not go off his feed like some others' who, when taken a distance, begin to fret'.unless a stable companion is travelling in , the same box.
