To the Editor. Sir, —I quite agree • with your correspondent “Ex-Pupil, 7 ’ with regard to the selection of a suitable slogan for Temuka, and .am quite : I of opinion that the one selected is * not a suitable one from either a grammatical or sensible point of view. The 'word “charming,’-’ I contend, is nut a suitable adjective to use in. the description of a town. JSancy one naming /Christchurch as '. . “.charming” Christchurch, or to go further, use the same appellation iii regard to Wellington. “Charming” Wellington is tbo ridiculous to my mind, How can you call any® town “charming,” is beyond my imagination, and the sooner the Business Men’s Association select a >— more suitable one, tlm better. —I am, etc., “ANOTHER EX-PUPIL.” Temuka, Feb. 7, 1927.

Sir,: —I do not write this in a carping spirit, hut .really the slogan chosen by the Business Men’s Association,. must cpme as. a matter, of keenest disappointment to many, for the opinion is shared by a large number that if “Choose Charming Temuka”. were the best of 83 entries, then there must have been some awful ones submitted. It is freely admitted that the coining of a suitable slogan is • not an easy matter, and while the catch phrase “Choose Charming Temuka,” as it stands, is one of, excellent simplicity, it lacks, “kick,” or, as the Americans say, “pep’s missin’.” It .is to repeat a remark-HI heard to-day, “wishywashy.-” :

Why ‘‘Choose?” Choosing infers, a discriminating, and' offers, the opportunity of refusal. “Visit Temuka,” or something more positive should have been selected. And, above all, why “charming?” It is scarcely pertinent to say Temuka or any other town is charming, although it is quite correct. to say that Temuka has many charming spots. Fancy a tourist from the main south road catching his first view of our fire station—the first view of our town from its southern

gates—and then saying, “charming!” Or consider, sir, the traveller passing through by train, sighting our back doors, muttering to himself, “Charming!” “Charming” has .nowadays become more or less a stereotyped or rubber-stamp word, and one which., carries a somewhat *' ' • feminine import. To apply it to Teinuka is ridiculous in the extreme for the town is vigorous and virile, >#r and provides .every attraction fertile holidayj-maker, sportsman or business man.

May., 1 suggest that the Borough Council take the matter up. with-the object of finding a better one than that Chosen?—l am, etc., “VOX POPUXtL” P.iS.—Think .not, sir, it is my desire to. decry the very laudable efforts, of the Business. Men’s Association in their work of putting Temuka on the map, but I honestly do >_ not think the slogan a good one, hence my suggestion for,, a further x > effort.—V.P. ...
