POOR PRESSURE.

FOR FIRE HOSES. FIRE BRIGADE PRACTICE. Last evening the members of the Temuka Volunteer Fire Brigade held a practice under the direction of Captain J. -Henry and Lieut. J. Allfrey. Ex-Captain G. Hancox was also present at the practice. .For a start, they went down to Lee’s corner and set up a single lead, of two fifty-foot lengths of hose, but the pressure was not sufficient to throw a stream of water up to the telephone wires, falling several feet short. The pressure, in fact, was so poor that the water coming from a three-quarter inch nozzle could be stopped easily with the hand.

At the meeting held subsequently the matter was discussed, and it ■was decided to try out the pressure at Gapper and. Sheen’s corner. Here the result was somewhat better, for under the same conditions the water was thrown some feet above the telephone wires.

The lead was subsequently divided and two fifty-loot lengths of hose attached, and the three-quarter inch nozzles kept the height. about the same, and on one being altered to ■the half-inch the difference was not very appreciable. Quite a number of lookers-on gathered around at the practice, one stating that he could'remember the time when a stream of water could be thrown over the Bank of New Zealand from the street to. the back yard, but apparently the water main being tapped outside the Borough has reduced the pressure considerably. , ; The results were viewed with no little derision, especially when the firemen repeatedly stopped the water with their hands, and expressions of surprise and incredulity were heard on all sides. But “seeing is believing,” and the crowd went away anything but impressed with the water pressure.
