BUCKSHEE BILLIARDS.
HONEST DIGGERS. PLAY AND PAY, At the annual meeting of the Temuka R.iS.A. on Friday evening, Mr J. Watson, in discussing the billiard room, said that £36 odd was a very small return for the year, and asked if there was anyone in charge of the room at night. The table should show a bigger return, and they ought to get at least £SO per year. Thirty-six pounds was only an average of 14s per week, and there was too much of the buckshee game among the Diggers. The 3d or 6d they had to pay was not too much.
The president, Mr White, said this raised the question whether some members were using the table without paying. “Is there a member present,” asked Mr White, “who plays billiards andi doesn’t pay?”
A voice; “Yes, I do!” Mr White: “I’m glad there’s an honest man in the place.” (Applause and laughter). Mr O’Connor, the secretary, reported that quite a lot of! the time it was left to the honesty of the players. It was hardly possible to keep a check on it. Another member admitted playing billiards without paying, A third member reported that he had looked after the table for three nights, and during that time only one game had been played. The president said it was unfortunate members did not use the table. It was for the use of the returned soldiers who, while they were away, got a talent for buckshee and retained the buckshee feeling here.
