TEMUKA DRILL HALL.

TO REMAIN OPEN FOR DANCING

During his visit to Tinmru on Thursday his Worship the Mayor (Mi - T. Gunnion) interviewed Colonel Young, ofiiecr commanding the Canterbury Military District, regarding the 'reported decision of the Defence Department to take nip the wooden floor of the Temuka Drill Hall and substitute an earthen or concrete floor, thus depriving the town of its only hall suitable for dances on a large scale—annual balis, etc.

Colonel Young informed his Worship that the department' had decided not to make any alterations to the floor of the ihall. Although the Defence Department had for some time past been considering the advisability of removing the wooden floor, tlie decision to allow things to remain as they iare will he welcomed by the people of Temuka.

According to the “Stratford Post" the “weather in Taranaki has been as dry as zzz'ikx. . ——Didn’t that com]), know .how to spell Geraldine, or was it some other word he was thinking of? A mixing of two paragraphs was responsible for a North Island paper reporting a dance in this fashion: “The men all wore evening dress, but most of the ladies wore' nothing will he done until after the session, when, the Mayor is freed from his Parliamentary duties.” — we are glad they had the deceaicy to explain that much, anyhow.

The topsy-turviness of things. The All Blacks, on their return from Sydney travelled first-class on nothing a day, and the English League footballers, on ten shillings a day, travelled second-class. I feel I, must attack that great contemporary the Sydney “Bulletin ’ for referring to May Beatty, at present with Hugh J. Ward’s musical comedy company, (as an Australian. Also ‘'‘Aussie’’ for referring to the famous sky-scraper black and white artist, Noel Cook, as a native of Australia. 'Both are New Zealanders. Which reminds me: Why is it that New Zealanders, who have made their names famous abroad, are always referred to as Australians? Noel Cook, Geo. Finey (of “Smith’s Weekly”), Tom Glover (Bulletin), Low ((now • faraofus in London) and IVI. King are fell EnZed artists. And look at the list of New Zealanders who have made their names something to reckon with behind the footlights—on the stage, and on the concert and operatic platform. Here arc a few: Rosin a Buckman, Frank Charlton, May and Maud Beatty, Joseph Brennan, Rosemary Rees (actress and (authoress), Amy Murphy, Pirie Bush (“starring” - on Broadway), Norman and Ethelbert Hales (both playing leading parts in New York), Harry Plimmcr,' Reynolds Denniston, Charles Carter (recently at Covent Garden), W. S. Percy, Bland Holt, Ethel Morrison (now at the London Gaiety), and others. There is no need to mention more. And yet the (advertisements always acclaim these people as “Australians.” Well, well! It is a big compliment to Australia, howmver.
