OBITUARY.

; JOSEPH WEBB. ■ -- ■- • ■.. . . r ' Through the death at the advanced age of 88 years, another of the okl- identities of New Zealand and South Canterbury in particular in the person of Mr Joseph Webb has passed away. The late Mr Webb was born at West Bromwich, Warwickshire, England, in 1834, and was up (o the time of his death, which occurred at his home, Waihi Bush, Woodbury, on Friday last. A hale and hearty 'man, despite his advanc- ' od age, When twenty years of age the late Mr Webb set sail for Australia in the sailing vessel "Flora Temple,’’ and for six years Avas at the Ballarat gold diggings. In 1860 he returned to England in the "Great 1 Britain,” and spent a year in the Old Country.- Later he came .back to ' Ncaa t Zealand and took part in the 1 Otago . gold rush, being one of the first to locate at the ’ Dunstan, antF subsequently visiting the Bannock- 1 burn, Arrow,and Shotoyer fields. He' helped! to saAy the timber for the first raihvay line betAveen Invercar-^'f* gill and the Bluff. Later on he v; - came to Canterbury, and worked for " some years in the Raukapuka Bush, ■-
