WAR MEMORIAL.
TO HAZELBURN. TOTARA VALLEY, AND OPIHI FALLEN.
The War Memorial erected in memory of the soldiers from Hazelburn, Totara Valley, and Opihi, who fell in the Great War, was unveiled on Saturday in the presence of a large concourse of people. The memorial has been erected on a corner of the Hazelburn schoolground \md has an imposing appearance. It is a granite obelisk mounted on a square base to which & broad flight of concrete steps leads up on each side. The base is sot off by panels of red rough cast, and there is a fence of light iron rails supported by concrete posts finished in red rough cast surrounding the monument. The inscription on the monument runs:—“Erected by the residents of Hazelburn, Totara Valley, and Opihi, to the memory of those who fell in the Great War 1( 1914-IS. We will remember them.” The names on the monument are as follows: —R. F. Aitken, F. C. Blackler, D. R. Carter, R. C. Carter, L Muir, D. O’Connor, M.C., M. B. O’Connor, H. O’Connor, J. T. Steven. The unveiling ceremony was performed by Mr T. D. Burnett, M.P.. who delivered an appropriate speech and the Rev. Mr Hughes also spoke fittingly. The Memorial Committee consisted of Messrs J. Mowat, T. B. Garrick, J. Fenwick, and J. Andrews.
