The report was as follows: — We have pleasure in submitting herewith the annual report and bal-ance-sheet for the year ended 31st July, 1922, and in doing so we again desire to congratulate members on . the result of the year's operations. '" The very satisfactory position of the j affairs of the Association is evidence that the progressive policy adopted by your various committees, has the hearty support and co-operation of the general public. The number of . exhibits at our last annual- show con- ' stitutes- a fresh record, the total beng 1239'as against 1082, the previous best, showing an increase of 157 entries. This great success, in spite of generally unfavourable conditions indicates clearly that , our annual function continues to steadily gain popularity. Challenge Cups.—The successful exhibitors with respect to the various Challenge Clips at last show were as follows: —Light horse sections, Mr R. A. Dixon; draught horses, MiAndrew Grant; sheep, Mr L. J. Grant; Cattle, Mr James Mcßride; Fruit, Mr J. Wordsworth; best hunter, Mr J. M. Shaw. As three of our Challenge Cups, viz., draught horses, sheep and cattle sections have now been won outright, we strongly recommend to the incoming committee the desirability of reinstating same. Balance-Sheet. — An examination of the balance-sheet shows the fol-lowing-principal items —the corresponding amounts, for. the previous year being inserted in brackets: Receipts: Members' subscriptions £llO 10s (£92), donations and spe- , 'cial prizes £93 6s (£6B 17s 6d), en- , try fees £ll4 lis (£124 6s 6d), gate receipts £177 4s (£l9O 16s 6d), rents £54 2s (£44 lCs), ground space, side shows, and privileges '£24 10s 6d (£24). The principal items, of expenditure are: Prize money £226 15s (£2.19 16s), rent £3O (£3O), printing and advertising £IOO 4s 6d (£BB 3s 6d>, labour and materials £25 lis lid (£sl 6s 6d). The balance of assets in excess of liabilities now stands at £573 9s Dd, as against £497 15s 7d last year, showing an increase of £75 14s 2d. Our position is accordingly highly satisfactory, and should be very gratifying to members. Entries. —The entries at last show in produce and miscellaneous sections totalled over 800, being more than 200 in excess of our previous best in these sections and our available slied!'sp'ace : 'was well taxed. The improvements effected by our ground committee in the produce shed proved most successful and exhibitors' expressed their appreciation of same. / In order to avoid the dust nuisance and to further provide for the convenience arnd comfort of exhibitors we strongly recommend that the produce shed be permanently floored prior to next show. ' "',lt is with sincere regret that we record the loss by death of two of our slaunchest supporters in .the persons of Ahe late Messrs J. Brosnahan and A. W. Elisor. Both gentlemen were for many years enthusiastic members of our general committee and manifested keen interest in our Association's welfare. We tender our deep sympathy to the bereaved families. There are still a large number of members' subscriptions outstanding, and we trust that these members will make a special effort to make themselves financial during the next month. In conclusion, we desire to express o\ir cordial thanks to all donors of subscriptions to prize fund and special prizes, to all judges and class stewards, and in short to all those who in any way assisted towards the •welfare of the Association during the year; Signed for and on behalf of your general committee —R. A. Dixon, president; W. F. Evans, secretary. The principal items set out in the balance-sheet are dealt with in the report.

The President said he had much pleasure in moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet. He little thought when he took office that the Association was going to make a fresh record, but this had been the case, and it was very satisfactory. He wished to point out that the judges' expenses only amounted to £3 19s lid, showing that they gave their services practically for nothing. It had been very gratifying to the Committee and himself that the judges had made some very complimentary remarks regarding the show.

In seconding the motion, Mr Arnritage said he wished to reiterate the remarks he had made at the last anuual meeting regarding members' outstanding subscriptions. These amounted to £25, which was far too, much for such an Association. He had been through the list, and was of opinion that at least half of the amount was unpaid through mere forgetfulness. He hoped that members in arrears would make it their

business to pay up. Mr Cain said the report stated that the Challenge Cups were given to encourage new exhibitors, but in the sheep and cattle sections, at any rate, thoy did not bring out a single

fresh exhibtor. In three out of four sections the winner had had no trouble. A member said the cups were open to all comers. The chairman said while he regretted that competition was not greater, he thought cups were a great attraction. Ae regards sheep they had brought 33 entries from him. In regard to the cattle class, Mr McBride had promised £3 3s towards the cost of a new cup: Mr" Maddren said in the cattle section, with the exception of the shorthorn class, the cups had led to more competition, and he wished there were more of them. He signified his intention of giving champion ribbons as in the past. The report 'and balance-sheet were then adopted. DATE OF SHOW. Advice was received from the Ellesinere, Timaru, Ashburton, Christchurcb, Peninsula, and North Otago A. and P. Associations, announcing the dates of their shows. , On the motion of Mr Armitage, seconded by Mr Maddren, the date of the annual show was fixed for the 22nd March. NEW MEMBERS. | Messrs L. Talbot (Kakahu Road), H. B. Elmslie (Geraldine), E. Green ; (Hilton), P. Jenkin, G. H. Watson, and T. Lyon were elected members of the Association. The resignations of Messrs G. Loach, Sheldon, and Agnew were accepted. - I The chairman said they had no rule regarding life members, but there were several gentlemen who had rendered valuable service to the ' Association, and he thought it would be a graceful act to elect them life members. A member said he did not think it was usual to elect as a life member a gentleman who was not an ordinary member. Mr Maddren thought it would be necessary to amend the rules before they could elect life members. It was mentioned that in some associations the fee for life membership was £lO. Ultimately, on the motion of Mr Paterson, it was decided to defer taking any action until fur-

ther enquiries had been made regarding tlie practice of other associations. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. Before vacating the chair, the chairman thanked members for their hearty support. He did not take any personal credit for the success achieved during the year. It was due to the enthusiastic support he had received from .members,- -and | particularly to the work done on his right (Mr W. F. Evans), their enthusiastic and energetic secretary. His year of office had been very pleasant. ; v .■■.....-. The secretary thanked the president for his kind, remarks. He had simply endeavoured to dd hjs duty in the ihtrests of the Society, and. he had to thank the members, and more particularly the ground, committee* for their assistance; during the year. It had .made hi* work light and pleasant. Mr Evans then called for nomina-, tions for the office of President. Before these were taken a letter from Mr H. Beli, vice-president," was read. He stated that for health reasons he would be absent from the district for a time, and for this reason he asked leave of absence from the committee for several months. Much regret was expressed that Mr Bell's health was unsatisfactory, and a motion, was passed unanimously expressing the sympathy of the Association and wishing him a speedy recovery. On the motion of Messrs R. Maddren and Geo. Ward, Mr J. Paterson was unanimously elected President.Mr Paterson thanked members tor! the honour conferred upon him, and said he would do his best,. Other officers were elected as follows : Vice-president, Mr Harry Bell: Treasurer, Mr G. W. Armitage (re-elected); Auditor, Mr F. A. Joynt; Finance Committee —Messrs G. W. Armitage, W. F. Evans, and J. Paterson; Ground Committee — Messrs F. W. Tarbotton, R. Maddren, A. Shaw, L.-Nicholas, M. H. McLeod. General Committee Messrs A. Shaw, R. Maddren, M. H. McLeod, M. and F. After a short discussion the charge for admission was fixed at the same amount as last year. Mr Maddren suggested that some improvements should be made on the grounds, particularly for the convenience of-oufside exhibitors, and he mentioned several alterations the benefit of exhibitors' of cattle that he thought could be made for cattle and horses. The old arrangement had acted all right in past years but the time had arrived for an advance. They did not need to go to any great expense. '

tSßumaxr i ■mxsmmmmm&wsssmm\ '.Mr Charles suggested- that improvements should be made to the produce-shed. . A floor and verandah were needed, also enlargement. /';:Mr Cain said it- would be impossible to-erect boxes for the horses, owing to the expense, but he thought something could be done for the cattle/ ■ After some further discussion, it was decided that the Ground Committee should go into the matter, and report to ; next meeting. '"" Mr Shaw moved, l xind Mr -Charles seconded that the Finance Committee go into the matter of obtaining a new lease "of the show grounds, and report to next meeting. This was very desirable. The meeting terminated with a vote of thanks to the chair.
