! BOARD OF CONTROL. [ ELECTED. j WELLINGTON, February 2S. ! The combined Parliamentary and Producers’ Committee set up in connection with the meat pool scheme, : completed its business this morning, , when it was announced that the following had been elected to represent the producers on’ the Board of Control : Messrs J. S. Jessep (Wairoa), H. B. Duncan (Hunterville), W. Periry (Masterton), A. Hamilton, M.P. (Wallace), J. C. N. Grigg (Ashburton). The Government nominated Mr David Jones, M.P. (Kaiapoi), ' chairman of the committee of members, which elaborated a scheme to the board. To complete the Board it will be necessary for the Government to nominate one more member ; and for stock and station agents to elect their representative. STATEMENT TO THE PRESS. The following statement to the Press was issued by Mr Jones, M.P., chairman of the Joint Committees. I “At the meeting of the producers’ 1 committee, held in Wellington for I the purpose of electing a Meat Proj ducers’ Board, discussion took place { upon the present position of the ex- | port meat market in New Zealand. It was pointed out that there is at present .a movement towards lower prices for mutton and lamb in New Zealand. This is in a large measure owing to the fact that c.i.f. sales are j difficult to make because there is less | shipping available in immediate { future, and the banks are very conservative in their advances against meat held in the works. “The statistical position of New Zealand meat published in November last showed that the export of meat from New Zealand for the year ending October 31, 1922, was estimated to be 58 per cent, less mutton and 22 per cent, less lamb than was exported during ,the year ending October 31, 1921. " The latest figures show that the estimate published in November, will very closely approximate the actual position. It is clear also that Home supplies of meat are very much less than in previous years. The opinion of the Committee is that there is every prospect of a strong demand for mutton and lamb at firm prices throughout the season. There will, apparently, be considerable shortage of all meat shipped from the Dominion this season. “A statement is now being prepared which will show the probable quantity of meat slaughtered for export in the present season, and this will be issued shortly.”
