A popular London actor-manager tells this story against himself. A year or so back he was having a new theatre bu'ilt, and excavations for ’ the foundations of the new playhouse ought, he thought, to yield Roman antiquities. Such a find would afford an admirable advertisement. So, as none was forthcoming, he stole down at dead of night and deposited upon the works a quantity of genuine, Roman antiques, then hurried next morn’ng to hear from the lips of the toilers the news of the great- find. The men had already dug well below the depth where he had deposited the treasures. “Morning, foreman.’’ he said to the head man. “Found anything this morning ?” “Not a thing, sir.” The actor-manager looked at the bulging pockets of-the workmen, and saßl nothing. Ho could not bring Imme to them the disappearance of Roman antiques which he himself had bidden. . --
