The Ashburton tennis tournament this year started on Christmas Day. The entries were good, including players from Hawke's Bay, 'Wellington, Christchurch, Tlinaru, Teinuka, and other places. Tin; weather right through was beautifully line and the courts in good order. Miss Jiaird, of Bastings, v.ho was niuner-up in the New Zealand championships last yeat, non the ladies club’s singles, and Mr (Jordon Seay, of Christchurch l , who stands next to (Jllivier in Canterbury, went right through the club singles, winning the, linal 7-5, G-l. In the men's handicap singles Mr Burrows won I lie senior grade and his son Ihe junior grade. In the combined doubles .Miss Stewart and W. Dcarse, after the score bad gone to 8-5 against (hem in the semi-final, won by 9-8, after a great recovery. ‘ln the linal Miss Stewart and IV. Pcarso met the Tiinani pair. Miss Soutor and Mr l.aurenson, and beat them 9-(i. In tin; handicap doubles IV. Pcar.se and Sands won the final of the doubles, defeating another South Canterbury pair, 9-G. Altogether the meeting was a very enjoyable one, and most of (he 'players arc travelling down In Dunedin to take part in the \.Z. championships, which started ye-derday'and finish on January 2nd. Then l was a good attendance of spectators each day, and thehrilliant play at limes was loudly applauded.
