' $ CLANDEBOVE. FAREWELL TO MR AND MRS WAKE , * AND FAMILY. At Ihe Gliinduboy schoolroom on June Jrd, a large assemblage ot residents mot to farewell Mr and Mrs A. E. Wake and family, who are, leaving South Canterbury; to ; make a new home in the North island. The gathering was a very representative one. and spoke of the high esteem in which tho guests were hold. A programme of music and song and parlour games was enthusiastically carried out, a break'being made between 10 and .11 o’clock for presentations. Mr and Mrs Wake received -a travelling rug and a pair of silver vases, and Miss Wake a silver toilet case. At 11 o’clock refreshment's wore dispensed, and afterwards games, songs, uivd choruses were indulged in till 1 o’clock, when the happy company broke up regretting Hint it was the last time it would bo their pleasure to meet with Mr and 'Mrs Make and family in a social way. All felt that they were losing friends and neighbours whoso places it. would bo very hard to fill. “Anld Laud Syne” was sung, and three cheers * heartily given for the guests of the evening. Mr E- Sievwright had charge of the programme, and acted as M..C. for the evening. Misses Bark.es and -Mason played the accompaniments. ’1 he following -were some of the items rendered :—Misses Mason and Burkes, pianoforte solos ; Rev. A. 11. Couch, Mr Seaton,'Miss Mason, Rev. J.Guy, and Mr Sievwright, songs. Several choruses were sung, in which the whole company heartily joined. Mr 1). Pemberton made tho .prcsontiJti on to Mr and Mrs Wake, telling of his own. personal'regret at having to part with such good friends and neighbours, and expressed the feelings of those present and all who had contributed towards the presentation. He said that individually and as a community they all felt that they were losing those good friends, neighbours, parents, residents, and a good family. He expressed the hope of all that they would meet with’ success and prosperity and make many friends in Hastings, and would find for their excellent family u fuller and wider sphere. Mr Pemberton called for three cheers for the guests, which found a hearty and prolonged response by the company. Miss Mason made the/ presentation to Miss Wake on behalf of friends and the Sunday School, expressing their regret at tho loss the district would sustain at the departure of one wdio ■ had so ably assisted in church, Sunday, School, and other work, and added tar personal regret at losing a friend and co-worker. She hoped that Miss Make in accepting the present .would consider it a mark of' the regard to which her good qualities had won their way. The Rev. J. Guy said he had but known them a short time, still could readily endorse what Mr Pemberton .had said, and on behalf of the church and friends in Tomuka he expressed regret nt the doss ,of such a family, and trusted That success, prosperity, and blessing would bo theirs in* their new sphere. Miss Lawlor, schoolmistress, expressed regret at losing residents who had been kind and courteous friends to her and had assisted ,in matters educational so enthuinstically and well.* She mentioned that those of the family who had been under her charge had proved themselves both in scholastic ability and -manners among the best she/had ever taught. Mr Sievwright endorsed, the sentiments expressed by other speakers, and stated that ho had worked with Mr Wake in district matters, and had several business dealings with him, and had nothing but praise and admiration for his manly, upright qualities. He regretted the departure of Mr and Mrs Wake from , the district, sni felt that the district was losing those who had worked well and earnestly for its good. Mr Wake feelingly responded on behalf of his, wife and family for all the good things said about them, and stated that it was going to be a harder wrench to leave Clandoboye than ho had at first thought. He felt that much had been said that night that they I had not deserved. Ho would-, always' have a warm place in his heart for Claudeboye, and the presents would be cherished for memories recalled of their friends and goodwishers in the district. He thank'ed , thy ' company on behalf of Miss . Wake for the beautiful present they . had, just given her. The chairman said he, • was sorry that Mr Nolan was indisposed, and that he felt sure that illness alone would have kept him away on this occasion. Seeing that Mr Nolan was one of the prime movers in starting a collecting list' going, he would take upon himself to tender an apology for his absence, saying he felt sure that more kind things woidd have been said had Mr Nolan been there. Votes of thanks were passed to the chairman, Mesdames Seaton and Batchett, Misses Barkes and Maaop, and other ladies whoso efforts went to make the function such a pronounced success.

SCHOOL COMMITTHK. Tho Clandeboye School Committee met cn Monday evening, a full meeting present (with one upologv owing to illness). It was decided to line! a hot drink of cocoa for the children during the cold weather. Mr Ji. Smvwright was appointed treasurer. Several matters of routine work wore attended to. It is intended to procure a bell for school 1 use, and the Committee hopes to got the grounds done
