FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. j The fortnichtly meeting of '.hi; South! Canterbury Board of Education was I held on Tuesday. Present—Mossrs C. S. Howard, (acting chairman), J. S. Rutherford, Geo. Lyall, G. W. Armitage, W. Lindsay, J. Maze, T. Shcrratt, and G. J. Sealey. An apology was received from the chairman, Mr W. M. ITamilton. CHAIRMAN'S STATEMENT. The chairman reported as follows : Miss M. Wilson, wlio was appointed /(ith 'assistant at W annate, had (dbclwicd the position as she lias been appointed Ist assistant in the Riverton District I High School. The Waimate Committee was asked to select one of the other names, and they had chosen Mis* Yesberg. Mr J. Johnson, who was appointed temporary assistant at Pleasant. Loint, has declined the position, as he ha- received another appointment. Arrangements will require to be made for the appointment of another teacher. Miss I. 15. McKonzie, Opihi, who is at present on sick leave, is likely to be away for ft month or two Ions; or. Miss M'cGill is acting as locum ter.cns. The Board's ba ance-sheet has been returned by the Auditor-General duly certilied. The annual audit of the S hool Committees accounts ta'vs place during April. The appointment of iliss Yesberg as sixth assistant at Waimate District Scliool was confirmed. Mrs Miller was appointed teacher at Pareora East School, and Miss Mc- • Pherson, teacher at Hook Bush household school. ; The Inspector-General wrote as lol- ! lows :—"L have to inform you that, in ; the regulations f o r teachers' certificates • now under revision, it will probably be ! provided that all male candidates shall take elementary agriculture and, siim, lnrly, all female candidates shall take a course in Domestic Science. This pro vision, will not, however, apply to graduates, or to Trinity College students who are taking University courses. It is suggested that the Principals of Training Colleges should, as early as possible, endeavour to shape the programme of students in 1 aecordance with these provisions." i The letter was "received" without comment. The Education Department forwarded a chart showing a newer method of restoring animation to the apparently ■drowned. A letter accompanied the chart, pointing out that if the Board did not cai'e to, the Department would distribute the charts direct to the schools.—Received. Miss Phillip?, Temuka, .wrote, thanking the Board for extended leave of absence. Her health w a s improving.— Received. The Pleasant Point Technical School wrote ashing for the services of Mr .1. Brown, B.Sc., Agricultural Instructor, durine the comiag term—Services to be wanted, provided Mr Brown and Mr Grant, Technical Director, could make suitable arrangements. Messrs Bell (secretary), and Miller (assistant), were appointed to audit the School Committees' accounts. Mr Sherratt was appointed to confer with the Orari Gorge School Committee concerning an application for-a grant towards cutting trees. REPORTS. Tho foreman reported i» detail on work that had been carried out during the fortnight, and made several recommendations. The report was adopted, and as a result the following work will ]>o done :—Ventilators fitted at Geraldine School, small room for cadet uniforms, to 'be built at the Temuka School, and ventilators in infant class room, and in Standard 111. room at tho Main School to be > put in. The Truant Inspector submitted a quarterly statement, which went to show that 185 children had been reported from 52 schools, 9» children bad been warned, and 72 parents notified Eighty-six children had given satisfac tory reasons for absence. Thirty schools had sent in no returns at all-Chief-Tnspector Gow reported that since the new Act had come into force, tho school attendances had been touch better.
