MAYORAL ELECTION.

Colonel Hayhurst said it would give him much pleasure to accede to the request contained in the requisition. With reirartji to certain reports which bad been circulated, to the effect that he would drop out at the last moment, he could assure them that they could accept his assurance that now he had started he would see it through He Was not of the opinion that thj office of Mayor should be a monopoly, but in view of the scheme for the introduction of high-pressure water supply it was not passible that the work would be completed in the nest twelve months-', and to 'give the Mayor u chance it would be necessary for him to remain in the position for two years to enable him to see it through. They could depend upon his doinyi his best for the borough, as it would be to his own interest to do so, and he thought that he could safely s.ay that •lie had never done>( anything* which was detrimental to the welfare of the ratepayers. There was certain to bo 11 contest, and lie.' would particularly ask that it should be conducted without Roimiosity and with clean hands, if those present would work together there was no doubt they would be successful. The support he had already received had surprised him, and he was constantly receiving- unexpected promises.
