The Attorney-Gener-al stated that ho had carefully considered the suggestion of the Hon. E. C. J, Stevens that the now class of business contemplated by the measure should he limited to the Government Insurance Office. A petition from Mr Peter Hoyos late Commissioner of Paxes, pinvinn for compensation on account of long and special servicers to the country, was read. The petitioner Rated that he had been frequently called upon to render assistance in many departments of State with which he was not connected, and had always cheerfully ; carried out such special duty. The House went into Committee, of Supply. On the vote Public Buildings, •C 83,190, Mr Forbes, referring to the, item of £SO on Government House, Auckland, moved that this should be 1 reduced by £1 as an indication that the civil list should be amended by

striking out all reference to Government House, Auckland.—Carried by 20 to 21. Mr Herries moved to reduce the salary of the architect by £l, the ■object being to get further information in regard lo the illness at Government House. The Hon. R. M’Kenzie said that Opposition members were trying to create a mountain ont of a molehill. One small drain had required to bo cleaved ont, and this being done, his Excellency and suite were, delighted with the new residence. There was no truth in the statements ns to defects in Government House. The, amendment was negatived on the voices. Mr T. El Taylor moved that the item of £IOOB (salaries of draughtsmen) should be reduced by £1 ns an indication that the committee wnls of opinion that no public buildings simi-' lar (o those beintr erected at Christchurch should be entrusted to a private architect except ns the result of public competition. The motion was a (firmed by 39 votes to 25, and the item was reduced ac-
