PRIMITIVE METHODIST CHURCH.

$ CANTERBURY DISTRICT SY-NOD. The fourth annual Synod of the Canterbury section of the. Primitive Methodist Church met in the Ashburjton Church on Tuesday afternoon, when the retiring chairman, the Rev. G. IL Mann, of Geraldine, opened the proceedings with praise and prayer. The Rev. R. .1. Liddell (district representative) then called the roll of delegates, among those present being -Messrs T. Bates and G. Loach (.with the chairman representing Geraldine), and the Rev. T. Coatsworth, Mr G. Smart and Mrs .J. Prattley representing Temuka. Officers were appointed, Rev. r _T, Coatsworth being appoint e.l secretary, and a vote of sympathy with Rev. G. Clement in his illness was passed. In the evening a service was held, when there was a large congregation. The Rov. It. J. Liddell conducted the first part of the service, and "the official sermon was preached by the Rev. S. Henderson, president of the Conference, who took his text from Bhilippians, "My God shall supply all your needs." On Wednesday the Rev. G. 11. Mann delivered his presidential address; dealing with the year's work, and in the course of it. speaking on the subjects of missions, religious instruction, and the Bible in schools, the gamb- [ ling evil, social impurity, and the need lof greater activity on the part of the Church. Mr Mann was heartily applauded as he resumed his seat. A deputation consisting of the Rev. [<L Whitehouso, the Rev'. H. E. Bellhouse and Pastor F. W. Greenwood waited on the Synod and conveyed congratulations on behalf of the Ash-bin-ton Ministers' Association, an! the Rev. .T. Olphert and Mr T. Sharp replied. During the afternoon reports wore presented and discussed with respect to the Church, Sunday School and Christian Endeavour movements, all of wliich showed that satisfactory progress had been made during the year. The Sunday School movement iaport stated that there were t.vontytwo schools in the Canterbury district, with an attendance of 1110 scholars and 1.42 teachers. The value of school property, apart from the buildings, was estimated at ;G229 "is, the receipts for the year had been C 327 His 7d, and the expenditure C 267 0s 7d. A banquet was held in the evening in aid of the. mission fund, at which there was a large attendance of the congregation and sympathisers. Mr G. W. Lendley presided over the congregational meeting, and delivered an effective address. Speeches were also made by I'tlie Rev. T. Coatsworth on "Missionary Work in Africa." the Rev. -J. Harris on "Our Mission Field at Home," and Mr T. Sharp on "Helps and Hindrances to Missions." Solos were suite, and a violin solo was given by""; Mr Claridge, Mrs Chi ridge playing'the organ accompaniment. A purse of sovereigns was presented to Mrs Good, Mr T. Carlisle, who made (lie presentation, remarking on her loval services to the Church. On Thursday the Synod concluded with a large public meeting. The R'v. G. Mann delivered an address on the subject- of "Teaching of the Young, the Rev. S. Henderson spoke on "Sabbath Observance," and Re-/. ,7. Olphert on "Bible in Schools.'
