May 25. The Arbitration Court to-day commenced hearing an important dispute between the Now Zealand Federated Bootmakers’ Union and the New Zealand Federated Association of Employers. The case involves iho interests of tho bootmaking industry throughout the Dominion. Principal demands arc preference to unionists, minimum wages for females (32/(1), expert girls working wax thread machines, for whom £2 10/- is asked, minimum wage for men 1/4 per hour. Mr Cooper. who appeared for the Union, said .the increases asked for meant a total of .020,000 per annum, but the employers benefited to tho extent of £7-0.000 a year owing to the increased duty on imported boots.
