EDUCATION BOARD.

The fortnightly meeting of the South Canterbury Education Board was hold in the Board room on Tuesday morning, Present —Messrs C. S. Howard (in Hie chair), J. Maze, G. W. Armitage, W. Lindsay, W. M. Hamilton, TV Sherratt, and J. S. Rutherford. The chairman stated that since last Board day Miss Kathleen Treacy had been appointed sole teacher at Kapua. The Orari Bridge School Committee had not yet replied to the Board’s communication regarding the recommendation of Miss Margaret Jennings as teacher. Miss Mary Wharton had resigned her position as teacher at Arundel. Mr Wain had notified his selection of Miss Wain as teadchcr of the household school at his residence, Riverlands' Enquiry had been made with referent to the purchase of a line of six 400-gallon galvanised corrugated iron water tank®, and a price of £3 12s had been given. It was decided to ask the Timaru High School Board to increase its contribution to the Education Board for clerical services, use of the Board s room. etc. The Education Board suggested that the High School Board should pay £IOO a year instead of £75 a year as at present. A*t a previous meeting the Ponrd spent some time in discussing the desirableness of appointing an cgricultural instructor for South Canterbury, and Mr Armitage tabled the following notice of motion on the subject “ That the post of instructor of agriculture to this board lie oilered to Dr Hilgendorf, failing his acceptance, applications to be invited for the position.” Miss M. Scott was appointed assistant at Waitafci, Miss A. Boyd assistant at Claremont, and it was decided that the vacancy at Te Moana bo readvertised. , .

The Education Department wrote in reply to the Board’s request for payment of a subsidy on £62 18/4, paid to the Board’s account by the Temuka School Committee. The Minister could not see his way to recognise as voluntary contributions some of the items of'which this sum was made up. Subsidy to the amount of £SO l/i would be granted.
