The Hon. J. A. Millar had to receive no . fewer than nine deputations yesterday, mostly on tariff matters. They were supposed to begin at 10 a.m. and go on till 4 p.m. The Wellington detectives on Saturday apprehended four men on suspicion of being the perpetrators of the recent robberies including jewellery and money of the value'of £IOO from the residence of Gerald Fitzgerald ; jewellery and money totalling £l3O in value from ,T. G. McCarthy’s house,; a watch from Miss Hannah Watson, and jewellery valued at £l6 from the Masonic Hotel. The names of the accused are : —Cyril Cosgroves alias Furlong ; George Terris, William Robert Sinclair, and John Hamilton. Cosgrove arrived recently from Tasmania, and the other three from South Africa Hamilton and Sinclair were taken in their lodgings, where the , detectives were concealed in a wardrobe. Hamilton was in possession of a loaded revolver. A largo safe jin Faery & Co.’s fruit market was dynamited during Friday night, and about £4O stolen. The men were brought before the Court yesterday and remanded until August 7th. A Chinaman named Leo, residing at Martinborough, has been declared a bankrupt, with liabilities amounting to over £IOOO, and an estimated deficiency of £3OO.
