ORARI BICYCLE ROAD RACE.

I A local road race was held at Orari on Thursday afternoon- exciting: a i good deal of interest, there being- a ! large crowd of spectators from all parts of the-district, including Geraldine and Temuka. The course was from Orari, over the Geraldine bridge through Geraldine to Winchester, and back up the main road to Orari^'' a' distance of about 16 miles. The officials were -:—Committee—Messrs -W. O'Neil, T. Behrens, S t Payne, Cas. Henderson, W. Mason, and S. Blisset (secretary). Starter and judge—Mr , Win. Mason. Handicappers—Messrs J. ' Smart and T. Stocker. There were 33 entries for tho race, which started at" 3 p.m., and four prizes were given viz•':—Ist, £2; 2nd £1 ; 3rd, ,10/ ; 4th, 5/. Mr T. Burke gave a special prize for the fastest time which was - secured by W, Bates, who did the distance in 44inin 55sec. The men finished in the following order :—Arthur Mason (4min) 47min 34sec, 1 ; George Pierce (4min) 47min 35sec, 2 ; W. Tavender (2min 15sec), 46min 20 sec, 3 ; Wm. Bates (30sec) 54min 55sec, 4. Out of 33 entries 14 riders started, and the finish was very close amongst the placed men, the others being all close up. Mr Broadhead kindly acted as timekeeper, Mr S. Pierce checked the riders at Geraldine Bridge and Mr Art Opie at Winchester.
