THE COBDEN CENTENARY.
LONDON, June 5. Seventy demonstrations were held in Britain in celebration of tho Cobdcn Centenary. Tho principal meeting was at Alexandria Palace, where 43 members of the House of Commons and 81 Parliamentary candidates were among tho 10,O0U persons present. It is alleged that 85,0U0 free tickets wero issued. Dr Clifford's choir Bang Liberal songs. After a short speech by Sir Henry CampbellBannerman, Mr Churchill moved a resolution proclaiming enthusiastic adherence to the Cobdonite principles of freetrade, peace and retrenchment. Mr Lloyd George. Mr Fenwick (Commoner) ‘ and Mr Clifford supported the motion. Large outdoor .gatherings on tho terraces welcomed Sir H. who passed along the road, which was lined by 3000 torch-bearers. The Cobdcn Club,, cabled to the American Frectrad# League at their banquet at Boston : Reactionaries substantially defeated : tho Centenary marks a revival of peace, freedom, reform.” A pilgrimage iby freetraders was made from Midhurst to West Lamington, Cobden's birthplace, and several, wreaths wore placed on his grave.' Lord Daveyi. presided at a.meeting hold at Midburst, which resolved in favour of freetrade. Professor Bryce made a speech eulogising Cobden. At tho banquet at Manchester, Mr Winston Churchill was the principal speaker. He proposed tho toast ”To Cobden's memory,” The Cobdcn Club has received many felicitations in connection with the Centenary.
