A public mectiog of ratepayers in the Geraldine Road ‘District and County will be held in the Volunteer Hall, Geral dine, at 3 o’clock to-morrow afternoon to consider the proposed sites for a traffic bridge over the Ilae-hae-te-moana River. A successful bazaar was held in Fairlie last week in aid of a fund to provide uniforms for the local cadet corps. The stalls were well stocked with useful and fancy goods, and the musical programme each evening was very enjoyable. An important general meeting of the Geraldine Football Club will be held in the Geraldine Hotel on Thursday evening next to deal with the matter of a contribution towards keeping the sports ground in order, and other business. A full attendance is requested. The weather 'during the past few days has boon extremely bleak and cold. On Saturday a snowfall seemed imminent, but in the evening rain set in, and continued for several hours. On Sunday there was a clear sky and sunshine for a few hours, but the atmosphere was decidedly “ bracing,” and yesterday was dull and cold. It is time the Geraldine Post Office had a, newspaper posting box. From time immemorial there have been two letter posting boxes side by side in the local Post Office, and the usual thing is to have one letter box and one newspaper box. It is almost impossible to squeeze a weekly newspaper through one of the letter boxes without tearing the wrapper, and the public are greatly inconvenienced thereby. We have heard numerous complaints about the matter, and we trust that the Department will attend to this much needed improvement. If they fail to take the hint, the member for the district will no doubt stir them up. Ask and thou shalt receive ” apparently is a Biblical lesson which a Young Men’s Bible Society down south has studied with considerable devotion. They too appear to have implicit faith in the promise contained therein, for not only have they asked us to supply them with a free copy of this paper, but have also asked us to subscribe to their funds They go into their financial arrangements minutely, and find that though they have 150 subscribers their contributions will not be sufficient. In our opinion they ought not send the hat round 200 miles from home. They ought to limit their appeal to their own town. We have any number of local institutions to subscribe to without extending our generosity 200 miles from homo. 'The concert in aid of the funds of the Pleasant Point School held last Thursday, was well attended, and a long and excellent programme wns gone through. The following look part :—The Misses Stevenson. Lyle, White, B. Cartwright, M. Lambert, G. Orton, Kay, Mee and Hoaro, Messrs Williamson, Brown, W. McKihhih, Butler, Standon, Dalgleish, Lucas, .Smart and Terras. r l‘he humorous duets by Messrs Lucas and Smart, the songs of Miss Lambert and Miss Williamson, and a trio by Messrs Standon, Butler and Dalgleish were most appreciated, although all the items went exceedingly well. Mrs Hinsan made an oxcell?nt accompanist. During the evening several gramaphono selections wore given by Mr Walker. Mr Crozier, the chairman, in. thanking the many perform, ers who had been of such service to the School Committee, announced that a benefit concert in aid of a family in the district needing assistance would he hold on Tuesday, 1-lth June, and hoped that those present would again help by their attendance such a worthy object. The drawing of the grand art union in connection with the recent bazaar in aid of the funds of St. Peter’s Church took place in the Parish Hall. Temnkn. :on Saturday evening. The Auckland Trades and Labour Council passed a resolution expressing the keenest regret at Mr Seddon’s illness, and on behalf of the anionists of Auckland they tendered their heartfelt sympathy to the Premier in his illness, and hoped he will soon bo restored to health. The Council felt that- the colony can ill afford to lose his services at any time, but more especially on the eve of the meeting of Parliament. As evidence of the fact that the Christchurch Meat Company has led and Is still leading the way in the matter of shipments to out ports of the United Kingdom and elsewhere, it is interesting to note that by the s.s. Suffolk the company shipped from the Smithflold 'freezing Works to all of the following: ports ._Cllasgow, Cardiff, Liverpool (United Kingdom), Fremantle (Western Australia), Capetown and Durban (South Africa), the total quantity shipped being 12,824 carcases of mutton aod lamb, thereby assisting to minimise the congestion of stocks at London. It has often been said that reductions on the Customs tariff on foodstuffs do not prove a benefit to the consumer, ns the retail prices of the goods are not reduced accordingly. It is therefore very pleasing to note that Messrs Nelson Monte and Co, the wellknown tea firm, reduced tho prices of their celebrated teas hy twopence per pound immediately on the recent abolition of the two pence customs duty on tea. Tho public are now able to purchase any of this firm's ‘well-known brands at twopence less than previously, and arc consequently receiving tho full benefit of the reduction. Tho fact that Messrs Nelson Moato and Co. have done this proves that the public do in some instances at any rate, receive tho advantages of tariff reductions.
