OBITUARY.
MR W. MENDELSON
It is with much regret we learn that news was received in Temuka yesterday of the death of Mr Wallingford Mendelson, in Durban on Tuesday. Mr Mendelson was the only son of Mr Julius Mendelson, of Temuka, and a few months ago he left his home in Temuka for South Africa, with the intention of settling there. Soon after his arrival he wrote, in a most cheery strain, lo his relatives and friends, stating that the voyage had greatly benefited his health, and this makes the news of his death the more sudden and crushing to his relatives. The cable message omits to state (he cause of death. When the news became known in Temuka it was received with every manifestation- of regret, and deep sympathy is felt for his mother, Mrs E. Cullen, and other members of the family, to whom his unexpected decease is a fell blow. Mr Mendelson while in Temuka identified himself with all kinds of sport. He was a keen angler, and it was due to the interest he took in cricket and football that Temuka has attained the prominent place she now holds in South Canterbury athletic circles. Not only in New Zealand was Mr Mendelson known as a sportsman, but when at Cambridge he succeeded in carrying off some o; the, most coveted honors. Mr Mendclson’s'prospects, now so abruptly terminated, were full of promise. He was quite a young man, and was a lawyer by profession. When the sad news was received by those decorating the Drill Shed for to-day’s carnival work was immediately suspended oiro of respect deceased. Mr T. Brown explained that it was thought; inadvisable _tc postpone the carnival as a great inconvenience would be caused thereby. It was decided, therefore, to adjourn for the evening.
