Presentation to Mr W. Mendelson.
A nice little gathering was held in Coira's Royal Hotel, Temuka, on Monday afternoon, to bid farewell to Mr W. Mendelson, who is leaving Temuka to try his fortune in South Africa. The gathering was composed of members of the Temuka Cricket Club, of which Mr Mendelson has acted as captain for some years. Mr G. N. Feilden occupied the chair, and in a very neat and instructive speech detailed the manj good qualities of their guest, and regretted very much his departure, his position being one that would be very hard to fill. When Mr Mendelson took charge of the first eleven it was the exception to win a match; now it was the rule to win nearly every match. He also leferred to "Mr Mendelson's generosity to the club, and closed his speech by asking Mr Mendelson to accept as a small token of their ettsem a handsome set of pipes, wishing him eyery success and a safe return to Temuka. Mr T. E. Brown endorsed all that had been said by the chairman. He was sure they all wish6d Mr Meudelson every success, and trusted when he had made his thousands in South Africa he would return and make centuries for his old club. Mr M. McLeod eulogised Mr Mendelson as a coach, and gave him credit for all that he knew about cricket. Mr Mendelson in reply thanked the gentlemen present for their kindness in presenting him with such a nice set of pipes. He prized them very much, the more so as he did not expect any expression of kindness. He always did what he could in the interest of sport, and enjoyed it. He predicted a very good season for the club year, and trusted they would all pull well together. He credited the " good fielding" of the "team for the number of matches won last season. Mr Mendelson's health was drunk with musical honours. Before dispersing Mr Mendelson was elected a life member of the club.
