Tho trouble in the ■ ransvaal aud the transport of American troops to the Philippines are responsible for tho rise in wool freights. There had beeh an in creased demand for tounage for trans port of troops, provisions for their main tenanco and munitions of war. To-day's wool rates by steam are £1 and |d, but the agents will not book for more than a few hundred bales. It seems almost certaiu that the rates will be id aud Id before the mouth is out. At Brisbane there is nosteamer for the January Bales, the Duke of Fife having been sent to San Francisce iu ballast to take up u charter to the Government of the United States. The agents are trying in all directions to get a steamer, aud the best proposal that they have beeu able to obtain was ou abasia of jd aud Id, aud even then for only a limited amount of cargo. There has seldom beeu such a sudden advance in freights ou this side, but the withdrawal of so raaiy steamers for South Africa aud United States business has completely changed ihe position. __^________
