Raratonga.

The schooner Torea, bound from Palmerston to Raratonga, was wrecked off Lanki. While close in shore a gale struck the vessel, which was unable to get to sea. Two anchors were dropped, but the vessel dragged, and struck tho reef stern on. She soon became a total wreck. Very little was saved. The wreck was sold for 20s. Colonel Gudgeon, British Resident, had a narrow escape when cruising through the group aboard the schooner Ngamaru Tuhi. The vessel was struck by a squall, and thrown on her beam ends, where she remained some time. Fortunately the sails split, and the vessel righted, much to the relief of the passengers, as there was a great danger that she would founder with all on board. The British Resident has been explain* ing the federal scheme to the natives throughout the various islands, urging them to give up their penchant for lawmaking, and set to work to cultivate tho land.
